Beware of acidic saliva

Protect yourself from acidic saliva

We all have 3 pairs of salivary glands secreting an average of 1.5 liters of saliva daily, and the latter is essential for our good dental health (teeth, gums and mucous membranes). The saliva that our body creates can be acidic, alkaline or neutral in its pH balance. In the case of acidic saliva , it is possible to suffer from several problems such as cavities, tartar, bad breath, dry mouth, etc.

Causes of Acidic Saliva

Saliva is essential for chewing, digestion and swallowing. Acidic saliva can be due to gastroesophageal reflux, which is a weakness of the lower esophageal sphincter that prevents gastric juice from rising. This causes a feeling of acidity in the mouth and throat. Factors that promote acidity in the mouth are tobacco, coffee, excess weight, a diet that is too spicy and too fatty, and stress. This acidity in the mouth can lead to various oral problems. Indeed, saliva has the role of eliminating bacteria in the mouth, and in the event of repeated gastric reflux, the acidity attacks the teeth, especially the enamel, the hard layer covering them. It is a calcium phosphate mineral that softens on contact with acid. Thus, it can cause erosion or demineralization of the enamel, making them more sensitive to attacks. This loss of enamel is the first stage of tooth decay.

It is possible to know the acidity level of saliva by testing the pH balance of the mouth. To do this, you need to use a pH strip that is available over the counter in pharmacies. The acidity level of saliva is indicated on a numerical scale. If the pH level is less than 7.0, then it is acidic saliva . To reduce it, it is essential to eat foods rich in alkaline such as fruits, vegetables and berries. You can also eat almonds, between 6 and 10 per day to lower the acid level in case it is very high. Also consider taking a cure of natural minerals such as magnesium and calcium. To maintain a healthy pH balance, also increase your consumption of foods rich in potassium. You will find it in potatoes, tomatoes and bananas. Foods affecting the pH balance are eggs, meats and some dairy products, because they are very acidic. So, eat them in moderation. Also, avoid drinks and foods high in sugar.

Acidic saliva can be treated with impeccable dental hygiene, because after eating, the pH of the mouth becomes acidic.
