How to maintain your toothbrush?

Maintaining your toothbrush

It's a daily ritual adopted by a large majority of us: every morning and every evening, we brush our teeth, which means that our brush spends an average of six minutes a day in our mouth to rid it of the bacteria that have accumulated there and that can be the cause of certain ailments (periodontal disease, cavities, etc.). However, if our toothbrush helps us eliminate all these impurities, they do not disappear completely. It is therefore necessary to clean our toothbrush. Indeed, a good part of them remains stuck to the brush which, inevitably, will bring them back into our mouth the next time we brush. It is therefore essential to clean our toothbrush correctly and regularly (once or twice a month ideally) in order to destroy the germs that occupy it. Here are two effective and inexpensive ways to do this:

This article is part of a broader theme, which is dental hygiene. We have an article that covers this topic in a comprehensive manner: dental hygiene

Sodium bicarbonate

Known for its disinfecting and sanitizing properties, among other things, baking soda can be useful in this case. To do this, start by filling a glass with hot water, making sure that the head of your toothbrush is completely submerged and that all the bristles are thus disinfected. Then add a tablespoon of sodium bicarbonate, which, in the presence of hot water, will react to form a foaming solution. Mix everything briefly and immerse the head of your brush, leaving it to soak for several hours or even overnight. Afterwards, rinse it generously with hot water to eliminate any remaining bicarbonate or stubborn bacteria.

White vinegar

Also known for its disinfectant properties, white vinegar is another alternative for maintaining your toothbrush. The method of operation here will be almost identical to that of baking soda. In a glass or bowl of very hot or boiling water, add three to four tablespoons of white vinegar (depending on your water volume) and let the head of your brush soak for about half an hour. Again, rinse it thoroughly to remove any remaining impurities it may still harbor and the vinegary, bitter, and unpleasant flavor that your next brushing may have. This operation can also be carried out in cold water, as vinegar is a relatively powerful active ingredient. However, hot or boiling water amplifies the antibacterial action and therefore remains a preferable option because it is more effective.

These tips will help you sanitize your toothbrush for impeccable oral hygiene. Finally, also remember to store your brush head up high, so as not to keep it in contact with a flat surface that's more conducive to germs. You can opt for wooden or aluminum displays, not to mention the carrying case available in our e-shop.
