How to use natural toothpaste?

like a toothpasteRub your dry toothbrush over the toothpaste in a circular motion – a small deposit forms on the bristles of your toothbrush,

Then lightly moisten your toothbrush under water.

Brush your teeth as you would with regular toothpaste. The toothpaste paste turns into a light foam and increases as you brush!

Rinse your mouth and that's it!

Let your toothpaste dry between uses. We recommend that you place your cylinder on an individual soap dish so that it air dries. There is absolutely no water in our formula, so there is no risk of microbes proliferating. If you still want to put it in a container, you can also reuse an old lip balm jar, a small glass box, etc.

Our organic peppermint solid toothpaste will ensure your teeth are perfectly cleaned while respecting your gums – no stripping in sight!

The composition of our solid toothpaste

solid toothpaste recipe

I

A solid toothpaste made by hand, in an artisanal way, with selected ingredients

Coconut oil is used for its antibacterial properties and helps our toothpaste solidify more easily.

Sodium cocoyl isethionate : a mild, sulfate-free surfactant, it allows the formation of a light foam which facilitates cleaning of teeth

Calcium carbonate and baking soda are two minerals, two very mild abrasives that allow the gentle removal of dental plaque.

White kaolinite clay (origin France) cleanses the mouth and neutralizes acidity

Organic peppermint essential oil : known for its invigorating and antibacterial properties, a few drops are enough to bring freshness and good breath!

How to choose THE right ecological solid toothpaste?

Beyond the desire to preserve the environment by offering a healthy and natural formula as much as possible, the choice of solid toothpastes is very wide today. Not all toothpastes are equal . In cream, powder, chewable or dissolving tablets, toothpaste soap, the offer is plethora! The many solid toothpastes made on a soap base are not really adapted to the oral PH (soap has an alkaline PH and should not be put in the mouth) Soaps are not intended to clean teeth! In short, it is difficult to find your way around.

Below you will find our opinion: no specific recommendations but rather a list, reviews in order to choose your favorite product with full knowledge of the facts!

Ingredients: natural or organic but above all without additives

  • The composition of the ecological toothpaste must be looked at with a magnifying glass, of course. The fact of being a solid toothpaste does not mean that the ingredients are always good.
  • Look at the INCI list and check if there are any non-essential additives. Preservatives, clumping agents for example are not necessary in a waterless formula. Most brands like Respire or Lamazuna put additives...

Look at the ingredients and check if they are of natural origin and from organic farming!

The container: box, jar, bag, plastic tube? With or without packaging?

As important as the composition, the container of the ecological toothpaste is also to be checked: if there is one thing that we no longer want to see, it is the plastic tubes lying around on our sinks.

A classic tube of toothpaste is: a composition based on 60 to 80% water + active ingredients + a plastic tube. Changing your habits and opting for an ecological toothpaste means caring about the container, the water used or not in the composition and the ingredients.

The best options are those that offer a composition with organic ingredients, without water, and with a very small container. Boxes or pots are interesting alternatives to reduce plastic waste.

But it is possible to offer a solid toothpaste without packaging and then place it on a soap dish or toothpaste holder for example. This is what we recommend at Caliquo!

The perfect accessory to add to your zero waste toothpaste would be our refillable toothbrush made in France. Keep the handle, renew the bristles when they are used and brush your teeth with our solid mint toothpaste and you will have already done a lot for the preservation of our environment!

Single-use toothpaste or refill available

Another point to consider: do you have to buy a new toothpaste AND its container each time? Or is the product available as a refill alone? The first brand to offer refill products was Pachamamai, with its toothpaste tablets to dissolve.

Solid toothpastes in the form of chewable tablets?

Toothpastes in the form of dissolving tablets?

In recent months, most cosmetic brands have been offering a new format for eco-friendly toothpaste: the chewable tablet format. Opinions remain mixed...

In principle, the "tablet" format is interesting because it allows you to eliminate preservatives and other additives necessary for preserving a product with water. We should therefore not find water and therefore no preservative in the composition of a toothpaste tablet. But some brands (Respire for example) still put them in.

It's up to you to make up your own mind! Biting into a lozenge and then brushing your teeth is very different from the usual use of toothpaste, but why not?

The benefits of natural toothpaste

Is solid toothpaste natural?

Natural toothpaste does not foam or foams very little, but it is just as effective as conventional toothpaste.

As for the taste, it all depends on the natural ingredients that compose it, and these are often plants . Natural toothpaste only contains 100% natural products recognized for their health benefits .

As natural components, you can find thyme, mint, rosemary and anise which will help freshen the breath while sanitizing the mouth.

There are also antiseptic essential oils such as clove and tea tree; they prevent the formation of dental plaque and the appearance of cavities . Also noteworthy are sage, chamomile, myrrh and witch hazel which soothe the gums. Cleaning agents such as mineral salts, baking soda and clay are also present in natural toothpaste.

The Dangers of Conventional Toothpaste

Brushing your teeth is a twice-daily ritual and we have all learned to brush our teeth with that famous plastic tube containing the white paste or dental gel!

We are all used to putting a small dab on our French-made Caliquo toothbrush. Using this type of toothpaste has become a habit, but unfortunately a habit that is not healthy for our health and for our planet.

In fact, conventional toothpaste contains fluoride , which is certainly effective in preventing cavities, but dangerous for health because it promotes :

dental and bone diseases, decreased intellectual performance, behavioral disorders, ligament hyperlaxity!

  • Did you also know that titanium dioxide, which gives toothpaste its white color, is a potentially carcinogenic product? It also often contains:

calcium pyrophosphate responsible for neurological, respiratory and cardiac diseases,

sodium lauryl sulfate , a surfactant that accelerates the appearance of mouth ulcers,

paraben , chemical preservative and endocrine disruptor

and triclosan having serious impacts on the thyroid.

Even though toothpaste is spat out when brushing our teeth, we still swallow a little of it without knowing it and all these harmful components end up in our bodies.

So, for your health, use natural toothpaste without controversial products!

Some frequently asked questions you ask:

Whitening your teeth with charcoal toothpaste: good or bad idea?

For some time now, with the arrival of teeth whitening kits, activated charcoal toothpastes have been the talk of the town. These products are supposed to make our teeth white. However, they are sometimes the source of dental problems. We will see that activated charcoal toothpaste has certain benefits but also many unknown problems.

Activated charcoal toothpaste has a highly absorbent substance derived from the carbonization of organic matter, activated charcoal. Thanks to its absorption, it is very effective in absorbing compounds that stain teeth that are hidden in food. Coffee, wine, tea are well-known examples that stain teeth.

Activated charcoal has been used since ancient times, first by Hippocrates himself, and then its use spread. It allows you to get your teeth white again quickly thanks to its absorbent effect. It has various properties: it helps detoxify the body, it is a remedy for digestive and intestinal disorders. It also fights against bad breath by eliminating bacteria that cause bad odors.

Using activated charcoal toothpaste is very simple. Just put a small amount of charcoal toothpaste on your toothbrush and then brush your teeth as usual for 2 to 3 minutes. You will then need to rinse your mouth well to remove all the black charcoal. It is very easy to get dirty, watch out for stains!

Alternative to charcoal toothpaste, what is siwak toothpaste?

In order to consume better and healthily, siwak toothpaste is made with natural ingredients. It contains siwak powder, white clay, mint crystals and calcium carbonate. It does not contain fluoride. You should know that sodium fluoride in several classic toothpastes is neurotoxic, and this is confirmed by multiple scientific studies. As for the taste of siwak toothpaste , expect a licorice flavor. It is a natural product perfect for the oral hygiene of the whole family, however, it is not suitable for pregnant and breastfeeding women, children under 7 years old as well as people under homeopathic treatment because of the mint crystals containing essential oil. To use it, moisten the Made in France Caliquo toothbrush and dip half of the head of the latter in the powder. Then, you clean your teeth as usual, and rinse thoroughly with water. Siwak toothpaste can be kept for up to 6 months. It should be noted that siwak is a tree found in the Middle East, and it has been used for centuries as a natural toothbrush because of its various properties for dental and oral hygiene. Among its properties, we note the protection of the gums and the prevention of dental plaque as well as cavities.

Organic and natural siwak toothpaste is excellent for the good health of teeth and mouth. Since siwak has antibacterial properties, this powder promotes fresh breath throughout the day, in addition, you will have a feeling of clean teeth. Used with a toothbrush from the French brand Caliquo, it prevents dental plaque, it keeps cavities away, and it strengthens and soothes the gums, it is even suitable for sensitive gums. But also, siwak powder toothpaste can make teeth whiter and brighter while facilitating digestion. Likewise, it does not foam, and it is not sweet while being as effective as classic toothpaste. It should also be noted that it is preservative-free, colorant-free, fragrance-free and synthetic-free. This 100% natural product is also good for the planet, as it does not contain any surfactants or other harmful substances such as fluoride or triclosan.
