Chaulmoogra oil has fabulous properties in preparations for the care of flaky, atopic-prone, or blemish-prone skin. This "gifted" oil is also exceptional as an ingredient for combating cellulite, hair loss, and dandruff, and for promoting and evening out tanning.
Chaulmoogra oil is a vegetable oil produced from different species of trees belonging to the genus Hydnocarpaceae , trees found particularly in India and China. The seeds of these trees are used to extract a thick, white oil with a strong odor.
Obtained in this way, chaulmoogra oil has been used for several centuries for therapeutic purposes. This vegetable oil was notably used in traditional Chinese and Indian medicines as a treatment for leprosy and, more generally, as a remedy for skin problems. Today, it is increasingly prized for its dermatological and cosmetic uses.
Chaulmoogra oil is mainly composed of cyclic fatty acids :
- chaulmoogric acid at about 35%;
- hydnocarpic acid at about 34%;
- gorlic acid at about 13%.
It also contains saturated fatty acids as :
- palmitic acid at about 6%;
- myristic acid at about 1%;
- stearic acid at about 1%.
Finally, to this composition are added unsaturated fatty acids of which :
- oleic acid at about 3.5%;
- linoleic acid at about 2%;
- palmitoleic acid at about 1%
Chaulmoogra has long been used in traditional Asian medicine, particularly in India and China, for the treatment of leprosy and skin problems. The oil extracted from the fruit's seed contains very specific fatty acids with a cyclic structure.
