The beard in popular culture: cinema
As long as it's minimally full, a beard always leaves an impression; it always has a connotation. This is even more true in the world of cinema, where directors think about the smallest details to give them meaning. Let's look at several of these frequently recurring connotations.
The beard of those left to their own devices
Tom Hanks in Cast Away is one of those examples. Of course, you might say, alone on a desert island, losing his mind, the first instinct isn't to shave or cut his hair by any means. He only has himself to blame for forgetting his Caliquo razor! Product placement aside, even if the viewer doesn't think about the character's hygiene, this long beard really accentuates the character's depravity with his long hair as well. Other examples include Christian Bale in Batman Begins or the characters in the series "The Walking Dead," the growth of their beards reflects their moral wear and tear.
The beard of class crooks
Let's be honest, while beards give certain characters a real aura, they are very often reserved for shady characters practicing illegal activities, crudely referred to as "the bad guys." But some people's style is so polished, their character so well-played and sophisticated, that we come to appreciate them. It's not the most striking beard, but Jack Nicholson's in The Shining is worn by a legendary character in cinema. His beard grows at the same time as his madness increases. Another example is Christian Bale in American Hustle, who plays the role of a crook.
The warriors' beard
The greatest of all cinematic warriors is probably Thor, even though his superhuman powers leave no room for competition. His long blond hair, combined with his beard and his mythology, make him an invincible character in the eyes of the viewer. The beard makes the warrior even more of a warrior in cinema, giving him psychological leverage over his enemy. We can also mention Tom Cruise in The Last Samurai, one of his most memorable roles.
