Organic artisanal soap: its benefits
Discover organic artisanal soap
Healthy for the skin and the environment, organic handmade soap is gaining more and more followers. Handcrafted by master soapmakers, it is part of an ethical and ecological approach aimed at consuming less, but better. Organic handmade soap is therefore excellent if you're following the slow cosmetics trend. However, you must be careful when choosing this type of soap by looking closely at the manufacturing technique and the ingredients that compose it.
The process of making organic handmade soap
Organic handmade soap is perfect for the body and face due to its gentler manufacturing process, which is cold saponification. The ingredients are not heated, and the final product therefore retains their natural benefits, which is why it is effective and suitable for all skin types. Cold saponification is an artisanal and ancestral technique of soap making. Concretely, it is a chemical reaction at room temperature between a fatty substance (vegetable oils or butters) and an alkaline agent (potash or soda). Vegetable glycerin, with its emollient, moisturizing, and protective properties, is formed naturally. The chemical reaction stops when the soda is consumed and when unsaponified oil remains. Organic handmade soap is also called superfatted, because it is rich in nourishing and softening active ingredients. The superfat content is between 6 and 10%, and this is essential to avoid the feeling of tight skin after use. The process ends with the pouring of the still-liquid paste. It remains in the molds for 24 hours before being cut. The drying time is between 6 and 8 weeks to obtain a soft and firm soap.
The composition of organic artisanal soap
An organic handmade soap is made from natural ingredients from organic farming. It contains vegetable oils (coconut, olive, rapeseed, sweet almond, castor oil, etc.) and raw, unrefined vegetable butters (shea, cocoa, etc.). The resulting solid soap contains the properties of its ingredients. The water used to dilute the lye and enable the saponification reaction is demineralized. Organic handmade soap also contains additives to perfume and color it, but also to provide other complementary properties. The color of the soap is provided by natural dyes (charcoal, clay, turmeric, plant extracts, etc.) and the fragrance of essential oils, plant infusions, or floral waters. All the components used are skin-friendly. They are healthy because they are not denatured by the manufacturing process, thus, the epidermis benefits from all their virtues.
