Compostable / biodegradable toothbrush = [100% FALSE]
A new product is making its way into the bathroom: the compostable toothbrush, also sold as a biodegradable toothbrush! So... For or against?
Compostable/biodegradable toothbrushes allow you to brush your teeth while preserving the environment. Indeed, it is recommended to change your toothbrush every 3 months or so. So, instead of throwing away a plastic toothbrush, you could simply put your compostable or biodegradable toothbrush in the compost. On paper, this seems very interesting, but beware, there's a big one. Several very important pieces of information about these products are being hidden from you. Why? Because organic and eco-friendly sell, and unscrupulous brands are jumping on this easy-to-sell, supposedly eco-friendly product to sell it to you at a premium price. The first piece of information that consumers are starting to learn: The brushes contain non-compostable nylon, and compostable toothbrush brands are hiding this from you. So, the first important point: the head is not compostable at all. But read the article to the end, you'll see there are plenty of other things that bamboo brush brands are hiding from you. The nylon head isn't the biggest lie. Beware, it's a potential GREENWASHING.
Where to throw away your biodegradable bamboo, wood and bioplastic toothbrush?
If your toothbrush is made of bamboo, unfortunately you will have to throw it in the trash. But if your toothbrush is made of wood, you can put it in the compost (remember to remove the head!). For bioplastic brushes, you can find a collection point that collects used heads and you can drop off your brush so they can be recycled.
The wooden brush is the only biodegradable toothbrush, it will not pollute and will disintegrate in your composter.
So, is the compostable toothbrush a good idea or a bad idea?
However, many people forget one very important point. To be compostable, you have to remove the bristles from this compostable toothbrush, as well as the staples that hold the bristles of this fake compostable toothbrush! Not very practical and not entirely eco-friendly...
Be careful, another point that we are hiding from you: you should not confuse a compostable toothbrush with a biodegradable toothbrush.
Indeed, biodegradable toothbrush means that if you throw the toothbrush in nature, it will decompose on its own, which is not the case at all for bamboo toothbrushes. You should definitely not throw them in nature because in addition to the nylon bristles which are not compostable at all, the bamboo handle is not at all biodegradable, it is even rot-proof and that is why it is used.
Compostable toothbrushes are only compostable in industrial composters and not at home; DO NOT PUT THEM IN YOUR COMPOST
Another point that needs to be clarified and that bamboo toothbrush sellers are hiding from you; you should definitely not put the handle of your compostable toothbrush (LOL) in your household composter. In fact, toothbrushes sold as compostable and supposedly biodegradable are in fact only compostable in industrial composters. If you put it in yours, you will lose all your compost. Another point, you should definitely not put them in the yellow bins because they will go to the incinerator and risk taking all the contents of the bin with them.
