Beware of acidic saliva
Protect yourself from acidic saliva
We all have 3 pairs of salivary glands secreting an average of 1.5 liters of saliva daily, and this saliva is essential for our good dental health (teeth, gums and mucous membranes). The saliva that our body creates can be acidic, alkaline or neutral in its pH balance. In the case of acidic saliva , it is possible to suffer from several problems such as cavities, tartar, bad breath, dry mouth...
This article is part of a broader theme, which is dental hygiene. We have an article that covers this topic in a comprehensive manner: dental hygiene
Causes of Acidic Saliva
Saliva is essential for chewing, digestion, and swallowing. Acidic saliva can be caused by gastroesophageal reflux, which is a weakness in the lower esophageal sphincter that prevents gastric juice from rising. This causes a feeling of acidity in the mouth and throat. Factors that contribute to acidity in the mouth include tobacco, coffee, excess weight, a spicy and fatty diet, and stress. This acidity in the mouth can lead to various oral problems. Indeed, saliva's role is to eliminate bacteria in the mouth, and in cases of repeated gastric reflux, the acidity attacks the teeth, particularly the enamel, the hard layer covering them. It is a calcium phosphate mineral that softens upon contact with acid. This can cause erosion or demineralization of the enamel, making them more susceptible to attack. This loss of enamel is the first stage of caries.

It is possible to determine the acidity level of saliva by testing the pH balance of the mouth. To do this, you need to use a pH strip, which is available over the counter in pharmacies. The acidity level of saliva is indicated on a numerical scale. If the pH level is less than 7.0, then it is acidic saliva . To reduce it, it is essential to eat foods rich in alkaline such as fruits, vegetables, and berries. You can also consume almonds, between 6 and 10 per day to lower the acid level in case it is very high. Also consider taking a course of natural minerals such as magnesium and calcium. To maintain a healthy pH balance, also increase your consumption of foods rich in potassium. You will find it in potatoes, tomatoes, and bananas. Foods that affect the pH balance are eggs, meats, and certain dairy products, as they are very acidic. Therefore, eat them in moderation. Also, avoid drinks and foods high in sugar.
Acidic saliva can be treated with impeccable dental hygiene, as after eating, the pH of the mouth becomes acidic. You should brush your teeth with your eco-friendly Caliquo toothbrush at least twice a day and for at least 2 minutes. Also remember to floss every night and use mouthwash regularly.
