Menstrual cup: good for women and the planet
Discover the menstrual cup.
The menstrual cup is a new alternative to traditional tampons and pads. Today, women want hygienic protection that is economical, environmentally friendly, and safe for their health.
What is a cup?
The cup is a bell, often made of silicone, that is inserted into the vagina during menstruation to collect menstrual flow. Once it is properly positioned, there is no risk of leakage.
Why the cup?
The cup is said to be economical because, once properly cleaned, it is reusable and durable over time. This is not the case with its enemies, tampons and sanitary towels. These sanitary protections are very polluting for the environment and take years to degrade. On average, a woman will throw away between 10,000 and 15,000 menstrual products, isn't that mind-boggling? There's no doubt about it, the cup is a good thing for our planet.
In addition to being eco-friendly, it's also economical. The cup costs between €15 and €30, certainly more expensive, but it's reusable with every menstrual flow. And if it's well maintained, you can keep it for years. Financially speaking, I think the question is quickly answered!
Health-wise, it's a great alternative. Why? There's a lot of debate these days about the toxic substances found in tampons and disposable pads, especially those with color and scent. Cups don't contain any chemicals, so they're not dangerous to your health.
Instructions: How should I sterilize the cup?
It is important to sterilize your cup when purchasing it, but also before reusing it. Sterilizing a cup will allow you to:
- Fight bacteria on the cup to prevent it from spreading to your body
- Remove stubborn stains from the edges of the cup or the stem
- Eliminate bad odors
Before sterilizing the cup , you must clean it with clean water to ensure the sterilization is as effective as possible. Cleaning the cup should be done in the morning and evening during your period.
Sterilize the cup hot: Boil enough water to prevent the cup from touching the bottom. Once hot, place your cup in the water for 7 minutes. Once sterilization is complete, you can run it under cold water to cool it down and use it again.
