The History of the Comb

The first combs date back to antiquity, around 8000 BC. At that time, they were made of bone, but the materials used for their creation varied: bone, horn, ivory, wood, tortoiseshell, lethal, and more recently, plastic. During the ancient period, the Egyptians and Romans used double combs made of wood or ivory. Among the Gallo-Romans, who combed their hair every morning, they used fine combs against lice, and the more spaced teeth were intended for styling. During the Middle Ages in the Far East and the West, women wore combs to maintain their hairstyles. They were generally made of wood. It was not until the 14th century that Alexander Parkes made the first plastic comb with the material he would call parkesine.

What are the different types of combs that exist?

The classic comb we all know is used to remove knots.

The wide-toothed comb, also known as a rake, helps remove knots without messing up your hair. It is mainly used by women.

The fork comb has a special look that allows it to create volume on short and curly hair.

The tail comb has a fine tip. Its point allows it to create precise lines while its fine teeth will tighten them.
