Bee wrap, ecological packaging

Bee wrap an alternative to cling film

Beeswax is making its debut in this zero-waste trend, a new, healthy alternative to plastic wrap. Good idea, right?

What is bee wrap?

Bee wrap is a food wrap that replaces the legendary cellophane or aluminum foil. Bee wrap is a 100% natural fabric made from beeswax and organic cotton designed to preserve your food.

It's been over 3 years since we introduced bee wrap to our store. Bee wrap has many advantages, unlike traditional food wrap. It's a traditional and responsible way to healthily wrap food that won't come into contact with the chemical components found in some food wraps.

What are the benefits of bee wrap?

The beeswax that makes up the bees wrap is waterproof and breathable, meaning that the food will be optimally preserved while protecting it against bacteria thanks to its antibacterial properties. But that's not all, the bee wrap is odorless, it has been manufactured in such a way as to leave no taste or odor on your food.

Bee wraps are a healthy alternative for us but also for the planet. This ecological object helps reduce waste production and therefore the waste that we create every time we use plastic film. The bee wrap is an eco-friendly object, yes, but it will also save you money since it is reusable. And as soon as the bee wrap no longer sticks, it is always possible to hold it with an elastic band for a longer lifespan. Once it is really at the end of its life, that's when you can cut it into pieces and compost it because yes, it is biodegradable!

Bee wrap is easy to use and, above all, easy to maintain. The fabric that covers your container or the food itself will allow air to pass through while protecting it from moisture. This gives you the choice, thanks to bee wrap, of storing your food outdoors or in the refrigerator.

And finally, it's a heat-moldable fabric! The bee wrap will take the shape you want thanks to the heat you create with your hands. It's adaptable, and that's a great advantage!

How to clean bee wrap?

Cleaning these bees wraps is child's play, you need to:

  1. Wash your bee wrap by hand in cold water. If you wash it in hot water, you risk melting the beeswax and your bee wrap will no longer adhere.
  2. When washing, remember to use an organic soap with a soft sponge like a tawashi or a natural sea sponge or simply your hand for gentle cleaning.
  3. Once the bee wrap is clean, wipe it with a clean cloth and store it in a dry place.

Bee wrap DIY

Bee wrap can be purchased in a health food store or online, but you can also make your own bee wrap at home.

Here are the steps to make bee wrap yourself:

  1. Choose your fabric. A fabric that you can buy or collect from home. Preferably a simple, lightweight cotton so that the beeswax adheres well.
  2. Turn the fabric inside out
  3. Trace the future cutouts. It's up to you to choose the size of your cutout: square, round, oval, rectangle, etc.
  4. Cut the fabric with special fabric scissors

Once your DIY bee wrap is ready you can heat it in two ways, either:

Preheat oven to 100°C (212°F ): Place a sheet of parchment paper on the baking sheet. Spread the beeswax on the beeswax, melted in a pan, and bake for a maximum of 4 minutes.

Ironing : Place a sheet of parchment paper on your ironing board. Place the bee wrap on top and drip the wax in a Z pattern over it. Cover the fabric with a sheet of parchment paper and iron to spread all the wax evenly over your homemade bee wrap.

Last step, let your DIY bee wrap air dry and once dry it is ready to use.

So the bee wrap tutorial is easy, right? Now it's your turn!
